Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, and is an important habitat for waterbirds and Sri Lankan elephants.

Why Visit Udawalawe?

Unlike other national parks, Udawalawe is relatively open, characterized by grasslands, thorny scrublands, and a massive central reservoir. This open habitat makes it incredibly easy to observe animals from a distance. Herd sightings of elephants are common, as are water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boars, crocodiles, and monitor lizards.

Safaris in the Park

Exploring the park is done exclusively via 4x4 open-top safari jeeps. Tours run at sunrise (best for birds and active wildlife) and mid-afternoon (perfect for watching elephants gather near watering holes as the day cools).
