4. Elephant Transit Home (ETH) Integration

Located just 5 minutes from the national park entrance, the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) is a conservation facility established by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1995 to rehabilitate orphaned elephant calves.

Unlike traditional elephant sanctuaries, the ETH minimizes human contact so that young calves retain their natural instincts before being reintroduced into the wild inside Udawalawe National Park when they turn five years old.

Udawalawe has a tropical dry-zone climate. Daytime temperatures typically range between 27°C and 33°C (80°F to 91°F).

• Neutral Colors: Choose subtle tones such as khaki, beige, olive green, or tan. Avoid bright neon colors or pure white that stand out against the dry bush.
• Layer for Early Mornings: Morning safaris departing at 5:30 AM can feel brisk due to open vehicle wind. Bring a light fleece or windbreaker.

To protect Udawalawe's wildlife and ensure visitor safety, the Department of Wildlife Conservation enforces strict regulations:

• Remain inside the vehicle: You must never step out of the safari jeep unless at designated park resting stations.
• Maintain silence: Keep conversation low and silence mobile phone ringers to avoid alarming wild herds.
• No feeding or luring: Never offer food or make calling sounds to attract wild elephants or wildlife.
• Zero plastic waste: Dispose of all rubbish outside the park. Single-use plastic litter is strictly prohibited inside DWC reserves.
